CRIME VICTIM LEGISLATION
KEYWORDS: CRIME, VICTIMS
The Japanese government is giving increasing heed to the interests of the
victims of crimes. The major gist of matters being considered is to keep
the victims and their families more informed on what is going on in the court
(being more open) and considering the possibility of giving the victims or
their families more participation in the actual procedures in the criminal
case. Input on the sentencing stage for example. The German system is being
closing studied as a model. More along American lines, the government has
decided to be more cooperative with victims of traffic crimes. It is now
more willing to give information to victims so that they more pursue civil
litigation for damages. One consideration is the protection of the privacy
of eye witnesses.
