And what happened after September 11? The Japanese government passed a special
anti-terrorism law and dispatched 22 vessels, including 2 high tech Aegis
destroyers to the Indian Ocean, again in a “support” role for the war in
Afghanistan and the war on terror. Although the law expired in October, 2003,
the government passed a new law extending it up until 2005.
